José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, has supported Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev’s suggestion to hold a meeting of representatives of the Customs Union [of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus], Kiev and the European Union in Minsk, Belarus, a Tengrinews.kz journalist reports, citing President Nazarbayev’s website.
In a telephone talk, President Nazarbayev and José Manuel Barroso discussed the current state and prospects of relations between Kazakhstan and the EU, they also dwelt on the situation in Ukraine.
“The sides have agreed that another such meeting could be held in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital city, if needed”, the statement reads.
The sides also broached the subject of Kazakhstan’s participation in the Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM), the 10th of the series of which is going to be held in October in Milan.
The other day President Nazarbayev had a telephone talk with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the situation in Ukraine and possible ways out. He also had a phone talk with President Alexandr Lukasheno of Belarus. The two heads expressed their support to efforts taken by Russia and other states and international organizations to render aid to peaceful population in the conflict zone. Before that President Nazarbayev also had a telephone talk to discuss the Ukranian crisis with Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö.
