The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Yerlan Idrissov and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have had a phone conversation on Sunday, March 29. During the phone call the two counterparts agreed to strengthen the cooperation between the two nations, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the conversation initiated by the German side, Idrissov and Steinmeier pointed out that the two countries had a significant potential for strengthening the bilateral cooperation in addressing regional issues.

In addition, they stressed the importance of the new EU – Central Asia Strategy for a New Partnership to be adopted by the European Council in the nearest future.

Since the strategy adopted in 2007 will soon be expired, the EU chaired by Latvia this year has been developing a new EU strategy for the cooperation with Central Asian region - that includes Kazakhstan - taking into account the changing geopolitical situation and specifics of the EU relations with each of the five Central Asian nations.

Kazakhstan and Germany expressed interest in the early signing of this document as well as a number of other bilateral agreements in science, technology and visa regime.

The two sides stressed the importance of the joint conference of French and German ambassadors to Central Asia, Russia, China, Afghanistan that was held on March 30 in Astana.

According to the Ministers, the event that took place at the “heart” of the continent allowed to form a comprehensive vision of the state and prospects of the ties between the European and Eurasian countries and provided a rare opportunity to make plans for development of those relations.

Initially, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius along with Frank-Walter Steinmeier were supposed to visit Astana to co-chair the joint regional conference, but the German minister apologized for not being able to attend the event together with his French counterpart since they had to attend the P5+1 talks in Lausanne, Switzerland on March 30 to bridge the differences on the issues regarding the Iran’s nuclear activities.

According to Idrissov, Kazakhstan was fully aware of the importance of these talks for the international security and stability. Therefore, over the past few years Kazakhstan was engaged in providing all possible assistance in this process, including its help in organizing the two rounds of negotiations in Almaty in 2013, which brought the talks to a new level.
