There have been no official requests on the part of Ukraine to purchase Kazakhstan’s gas, representatives of the country’s Energy Ministry told a Tengrinews.kz journalist.

“The Ministry has received no requests from Ukraine to supply gas”, Vice Energy Minister Magzum Mirzagaliyev said in an official letter.
Earlier, Yury Labeznik, Ukraine’s Charge d’Affaires in Kazakhstan, told in an interview for Astana TV Channel. “When the Eurasian Economic Union is launched, Kazakhstan will get an access to energy infrastructure and will be able to supply gas to whatever markets it wants (…) I want to reiterate that Ukraine is ready to purchase gas directly from Kazakhstan”, he said.

The Ministry’s official reminded that Kazakhstan’s gas had been traditionally exported towards Russia only, with sales of gas taking place at the border. “Given the Eurasian Economic Union agreements, access to the common infrastructure can only be enjoyed to meet the demand for gas in the member states’ territory, with no opportunities to enter markets of a third country”, he elaborated.

He emphasized that “Kazakhstan’s gas can only be supplied to third countries across Russia; and within the agreements currently in place, access to Russia’s gas transportation system can only be provided to meet energy needs of the Eurasian Economic Union member states”.
