Creation of new transport corridors in Central Asia under the U.S.-supported New Silk Way initiative will strengthen Kazakhstan’s sovereignty, Silk Road Newsline reports citing Nursultan Nazarbayev’s political advisor Yermukhamet Yertysbayev as saying in Washington. “As for the Silk Way, the fact that America is taking steps in this direction is very important for Kazakhstan, as in my view it is not going back to the past, into the historic past. This is creation of powerful new transport corridors that will help strengthen the sovereignty of not only Kazakhstan, but also all five Central Asian countries,” Yertysbayev said. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the New Silk Way initiative on July 20, 2011, in her speech in Chennai, India. The initiative provides for creation of a network of trade and transport corridors via Afghanistan and linking the markets of South and Central Asian countries. This will also allow land-locked Central Asian countries to expand their access to the foreign markets. On June 14 Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov stated at the international conference called Heart of Asia in Kabul that Kazakhstan was reviewing the possibility of participating in development of Afghanistan railroads. For that Kazakhstan had completed construction of the railroad section to Turkmenistan border. Besides, the Minister noted that Kazakhstan would support international projects in energy and development of the regional transport infrastructure. Construction of Western Europe – Western China road was one of such projects. “China-Europe road is now constructed actively and intensely and a major part of this road will go along the territory of Kazakhstan. This will be the shortest, the cheapest and the fastest way - compared to the sea route - that will link China and Europe. You know that China is currently almost the top economy of the world. It is called the global workshop. The gigantic flow of goods will go to Europe via our country,” Kazakhstan President’s Advisor said. Answering the question about the future of Kazakhstan-American relations, Yertysbayev expressed his confidence that Astana and Washington would continue their strategic dialog. “I think that further development of our country through its relations with America are based on three main directions. First direction is further development of oil and gas sector that is very important for our country. Second direction is military-and-political cooperation that has been established between America and Kazakhstan during the 20 years (of Kazakhstan's independence). Third direction provides that America has to firmly, persistently and delicately request Kazakhstan state political elite to implement democratic values not in words but in deeds. If Kazakhstan becomes a truly democratic country, this will be the most powerful foundation for our sovereignty and none of the great countries, regardless of their political regime, will be able to take our freedom away from us,” Kazakhstan President’s Advisor said.
