Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that the newly founded city of Alatau will be granted special status with direct subordination to the government. The Head of State made the statement during his annual Address to the Nation.
Tokayev instructed that a draft decree on granting Alatau this special status must be prepared within ten days. According to him, this step will create a strong institutional framework for the development of Alatau City.
The President emphasized that during his recent visit to China, Kazakhstan signed multibillion-dollar agreements with leading global companies. One of these companies, previously involved in building the global technology hub of Shenzhen, will participate in the Alatau City project.
“A separate law will be adopted within six months to define the city’s governance system, financial models and other important aspects. A special legal status is not a privilege but a necessary measure and tool, without which the project risks remaining on paper. Alatau City must become the region’s first fully digital city, from Smart City technologies to cryptocurrency payments. The new city will embody the image of Kazakhstan’s future, combining technological progress with maximum comfort for residents,” Tokayev said.
Alatau was officially established in 2024 following a presidential decree. The government approved the master plan of the city, while also redefining the boundaries of the Ili and Talgar districts and the city of Konaev.
