A memorial to victims of famine was opened in Pavlodar, Tengrinews.kz reports.

The monument is presented as a boy weeping over his dead mother. Pavlodar sculptor Marat Abylkassimov is the author of the memorial. The concrete monument was installed at the entrance of the city next to the old Muslim cemetery, where a mass burial of victims of famine was discovered. The monument’s area is 22 square meters and the sculpture is 3 meters high. It was made in almost 2 weeks.

According to the archive data, over 300 thousand people died of famine in Pavlodar oblast. According to records 435 bodies were collected from the city's streets on May 1-2, 1931.

The Wall of memory of victims of political repressions was installed in Petropavlovsk the same day. The names of 6,800 people repressed in North-Kazakhstan oblast are engraved on the plates. “Today we are opening the Wall of Memory of the victims of political repressions and totalitarianism. This is now part of the memorial complex together with the monument to victims of mass repressions,” Akim (Governor) of North-Kazakhstan oblast Serik Belyalov said.

8 million tenge ($53.7 thousand) was raised for construction of the monument. It was erected in less than a month. The monument is 56 meters long.

Over 130 thousand people were deported to North-Kazakhstan oblast in 1930-1950. They included 79 thousand Germans, 25,292 Poles, 20,798 Chechens and Ingush, as well as Koreans, Moldovans and many other ethnic groups.

The same day, on May 31, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev opened a Memorial to famine victims in Astana. The memorial complex is represented by the Wall of Grief made in the form of Kerege part of the yurt and a sculptural combination made of the figures of a woman and a child.

“Today is a day of memory of victims of political repressions and famine. We remember the two tragic dates. This year is the 80th anniversary of the mass famine in our country and the 75th anniversary of the political repressions. Not only Kazakhstan suffered through this famine. 7 million people died of famine in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Over 1.5 million of those who died of the famine lived in Kazakhstan,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the opening ceremony.
