Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the necessity to jointly counter modern challenges and threats for the CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States) at the CIS Summit in Dushanbe, the President's press-service reports.

“I am sure that only continuous opinions exchange and search for modern solutions of pressing CIS issues is the most effective and the only way to achieve our common goals. Currently major attention should be given to cooperation of our countries in enhancing stability and security, stepping up efforts on joint countering of modern challenges and threats,” the President said.

Nursultan Nazarbayev noted that “the Commonwealth has fulfilled an important task: new relations have been established and are based on the principles of international law and sovereign equality. At the same time we have maintained and enhanced traditional friendship relations between our countries.”

“The CIS member-countries have managed to find cooperation formats accepted by everyone and quite effective amid the new geopolitical reality. It is not a secret that there was a time when only lazy ones did not criticized our organization. There were many opinions that the Commonwealth had exhausted itself out. Despite of that, five years ago we took a course to reformation of the Commonwealth and improvement of its bodies' activities,” Nazarbayev said.

The President noted that there are flaws and complicated issues in the CIS, but there are certain positive moves towards joint work. “A number of important documents have been adopted, the Concept of CIS Further Development has been approved and is currently being implemented. The Strategy of CIS Economic Development until 2020 is being implemented as well,” the press-service's message states.
