Kazakhstani militants in Syria02 april 2014, 17:22
The number of Kazakhstanis participating in military actions in Syria has been overstated, Tengrinews reports citing a Kazakhstani political expert Yerlan Karin.
"I remember the heated discussions caused by the video about 150 Kazakhstanis in Syria. But this number is exaggerated; we are not talking about a couple hundreds of Kazakhstanis fighting there. This number was exaggerated for agitation purposes. We have to understand that terrorism is not only about explosions and suicide bombing, but it is also about cyber warfare. In fact, it is information war for the most part," Karin said. The political expert believes its important to separate real from fabricated information.
In the fall of 2013, an Internet video promoting war in Syria was released from somewhere in Middle East. Among other things it spoke about 150 Kazakhstanis taking part in military actions in Syria and called for more people to join in. But the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan repudiated that such a large number of Kazakhstan nationals was involved. The Committee acknowledged that there were some Kazakhstani citizens in Syria, however, and pledged that the Committee was working hard to return them back to Kazakhstan.
"I have talked with many foreign experts that are concerned with the same problem. They think that the numbers are exaggerated. Foreign experts are maintaining the list of almost all foreign mercenaries who departed for military actions. For example, Belgian experts have created a map of more than 300 Belgians who are taking part in military actions in Syria. Azerbaijani experts have collected data on 250 Azerbaijanis who are active in Syria. But they are suspicious of these numbers because they are too big," he said.
