Tengrinews.kz – During the summit of the Organization of Turkic States, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the issue of the Caspian Sea’s declining water levels, citing the Akorda press service.
The President noted that one of the most pressing global challenges is water scarcity, which could become the most acute problem in Central Asia.
Tokayev emphasized that, since river water resources are shared, new approaches are needed to ensure their efficient use. He suggested considering a joint program that would include digital monitoring of irrigation systems, widespread adoption of drip irrigation, and improved efficiency of reservoirs.
"You know that the Caspian Sea is currently drying up. This concerns all of us. The Caspian is a unique symbol of the Turkic world, a connecting link between our peoples. The decreasing sea level in recent years negatively affects the region’s ecology and economy. This globally significant issue I raised at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the UN General Assembly anniversary session. As neighboring brotherly countries, we must pay close attention to improving the Caspian’s condition. I urge the Turkic states to join efforts in this direction, develop joint projects, and support relevant international initiatives," the President said.
Tokayev also announced that Kazakhstan plans to hold a Regional Summit in April next year, supported by the UN, on the topic “Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future”.
"We hope that the Turkic countries will participate in the forum and be represented at a high level," President Tokayev added.
