President Barack Obama returned to Washington late Sunday after spending two weeks vacationing on the posh island of Martha's Vineyard with his family,AFP reports.

Air Force One landed at 6:42 pm (2242 GMT) at Andrews Air Force Base just outside Washington.

Obama, his wife Michelle and their daughters Malia, 17, and Sasha, 14, then boarded the presidential helicopter Marine One, arriving about 20 minutes later.

Obama spent his last day on the Atlantic seaside retreat in Massachusetts playing golf, his favorite vacation activity, having played about every other day during his stay.

The US president, whose term ends in a little more than 500 days, is gearing up for a hefty workload in September.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pope Francis will visit, and the UN General Assembly gathering of world leaders will take place at the end of the month in New York.

He is also facing a stiff battle against Republicans in Congress over the nuclear accord signed between Iran and world powers in July.

Congress is due to vote in the coming weeks on the deal aimed to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief.

Republican lawmakers are united in opposing the Iran deal, and Congress is expected to pass a resolution of disapproval in September.

Obama is certain to veto the resolution, and he would need just one third of members in each chamber to back him to ram the deal through.

According to a CNN/ORC poll published Thursday, most Americans (56 percent) say Congress should reject the agreement.

Obama is due to kick off his week with a stop in Las Vegas on Monday to deliver remarks at the National Clean Energy Summit.
