Borat swimsuits: Belgian fans punished in Astana

Tengrinews.kz – Three supporters of Belgian club Brugge have been punished for their behavior during the Champions League match against Kairat, according to Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Internal Affairs Sanzhar Adilov.

After the Kairat–Brugge match, videos appeared on social media showing several fans of the Belgian team wearing swimsuits resembling the outfit of the famous character played by Sacha Baron Cohen in the film “Borat”.

The capital’s police department stated that the supporters had been detained and their case was referred to court.

It has since emerged that the hearing has already taken place and a verdict has been handed down.

“They have been held administratively liable. There is a court decision imposing five days of administrative arrest. This is the court’s decision; I will not comment on it in more detail,” Adilov said at a briefing in the Senate.

Tengrinews.kz contacted the court’s press service to clarify the penalty. It was established that the Belgian nationals admitted their guilt.

“On January 21, 2025, the Specialized Inter-district Administrative Court (SIAC) of Astana received administrative offence cases against Belgian citizens S., D. and N. on charges of petty hooliganism. On January 20, 2026, while intoxicated in the stands of the Astana Arena stadium, S., D. and N. removed their clothing, remaining in their underwear, and chanted slogans, attracting public attention and disturbing public order,” the court stated in its response to Tengri Sport’s inquiry.

It is noted that in the court hearing they admitted their guilt, explaining their actions as driven by emotion. The offence was confirmed by video recordings.

“Under Part 1 of Article 434 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, petty hooliganism is punishable by a fine of 20 MCI or administrative arrest for a period of 5 to 15 days. By a ruling of the SIAC of Astana, S., D. and N. were found guilty and given five days of administrative arrest,” the court concluded.

It should be noted that the behavior of the Belgian fans caused a public outcry and numerous comments on social media.

As for the match itself, it ended 4:1 in favor of Brugge and was Kairat’s last home game in the 2025/2026 Champions League campaign.
