Tengrinews.kz — Special accounts for children will appear in WhatsApp. They will allow parents to manage communication settings and control who their child can chat with.
What will change
The new feature was announced by the developers in the official WhatsApp blog. It concerns parent-managed accounts designed for younger teenagers. After setup, some of the app’s features will be restricted. The child will mainly retain access to chats and calls, while certain functions and content will be unavailable.
Parents will be able to manage the main communication settings. For example, they will be able to:
- decide who can contact the account;
- choose which groups the child can join;
- review message requests from unknown contacts;
- manage the account’s privacy settings.
The child will not be able to reverse these settings on their own — any change to the security system will require a 6-digit password known only to the parent.
How the system will work
To activate parental controls, two devices will be required — the child’s phone and the parent’s smartphone.
After that, the two devices must be linked. To set up a parent-managed WhatsApp account, you need to:
- install WhatsApp on the child’s phone;
- choose a language and tap Agree and continue;
- in the additional options, select Create a parent-managed account;
- register the child’s phone number and enter their date of birth;
- link the child’s phone to the parent’s device by scanning a QR code;
- create a 6-digit parental PIN code and complete the setup.
We checked whether the new option is already available on devices in Kazakhstan, but it does not yet appear in the app settings. Usually, such updates are rolled out in stages: first in certain countries, and then gradually become available to users worldwide.
