“Urgently replace your alarm system”: Kazakhstanis warned of new type of fraud
Tengrinews.kz — A 37-year-old man, posing as a fire safety service employee, extorted money from local entrepreneurs in Karaganda region. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“He introduced himself as an Emergency Ministry employee”
According to the investigation, the suspect called entrepreneurs, introduced himself as an employee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and convinced them that they urgently needed to replace their fire alarm systems. He claimed that otherwise their businesses could face large fines.
To gain their trust, the man offered to help them buy equipment at below-market prices through supposedly verified suppliers. After that, he asked them to transfer money to bank accounts belonging to his relatives and acquaintances, which he used to receive the funds.
One of the victims of the fraudulent scheme was a local entrepreneur, who filed a police report in June. According to the investigation, the damage amounted to about 200,000 tenge.
During operational search measures, police identified the suspect and detained him. A pre-trial investigation into fraud is now underway. Law enforcement officers are also checking his possible involvement in other similar crimes.
Police recommendations
The Karaganda region Police Department urged entrepreneurs and residents of the region to remain vigilant.
Police called on people not to trust strangers who introduce themselves as government officials and demand that they urgently buy equipment, transfer money or pay for any services.
Police also reminded people not to transfer money to strangers. If you suspect that you have encountered fraudsters, immediately contact police by calling 102.
