Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said a second nuclear power plant could be constructed in Kazakhstan’s Abai Region, speaking at a meeting of the National Council for Science and Technology.
He suggested that the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty should be considered as the base for a multipurpose research reactor, noting that the institute’s potential could make it the core of a new scientific hub. At the same time, Tokayev stressed the importance of taking into account the country’s financial capabilities and avoiding “careless” spending on multibillion-dollar projects.
“With the prospect of building a nuclear power plant in Abai Region, it is necessary to prepare a detailed plan for a science city in Kurchatov. The Academy of Sciences, the regional administration and the National Nuclear Center should be involved. At the same time, conditions must be created for engineering and industrial facilities. Effective public-private partnership mechanisms are needed to strengthen nuclear infrastructure,” Tokayev said.
Another priority outlined by the president was the development of nuclear medicine. He emphasized that advanced nuclear technologies could significantly improve healthcare, especially in treating cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The government was tasked with producing domestic radiopharmaceuticals and establishing a network of nuclear medicine centers at leading clinics and universities.
In February 2025, the government officially approved the site for Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant in the Zhambyl District of Almaty Region, near the village of Ulken. Earlier, Tokayev had instructed the government and Samruk-Kazyna to draw up long-term plans for developing the nuclear industry and to conduct a comprehensive analysis of potential locations and technologies for future plants.
