Tengrinews.kz – Images of what is being presented online as a possible new design for Kazakhstan’s passport have begun circulating on social media, triggering heated debate. Users noted that the document appears visually similar to South Korea’s passport, prompting discussion.

The “leaked” design that appeared online quickly became a topic of active discussion. Opinions were divided: some users described the proposed look as modern and neat, while most commentators argued in favor of keeping the current turquoise passport.

Many users agreed that Kazakhstan’s existing passport stands out among other documents, remains recognizable and is visually associated with the country.

“People often notice it abroad — it’s genuinely beautiful,” one user wrote.
“The turquoise color and the large emblem are our signature. Why turn it into another blue passport like everyone else’s?” another commented.

At the same time, some users pointed out that the Interior Ministry had not published the circulating images, meaning they are not an official version of a new passport and have no connection to any approved design.

The design will indeed change — but not the one shown online

The editorial team requested clarification from the Interior Ministry. The agency confirmed that the images circulating on social media are unrelated to the official project for a new Kazakh passport.

“The material in question does not relate to the design currently being developed for the new passport of a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the ministry said.

Officials clarified that work on a new design is indeed underway, but the project remains at the development stage.

“When developing the new design, advanced technologies for incorporating additional security features are being taken into account, in line with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” the ministry noted.

The Interior Ministry emphasized that security and compliance with international standards are the top priorities in creating the new passport. The possibility of considering public opinion is предусмотрена within the established procedure.

How strong is Kazakhstan’s passport?

According to the Henley Passport Index, Kazakhstan’s passport ranks 67th globally and allows visa-free entry to 78 countries.
