Tengrinews.kz - Renowned sinologist Ivan Zuenko has shared a rare photo of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Following the publication of photos featuring the President of Kazakhstan on his Telegram channel, Ivan Zuenko posted yet another photograph, which he described as truly rare.
"A photo of a group of trainees from the 1983/1984 academic year during classes at the Beijing Language Institute... Second in the second row is Kassym-Jomart Kemelovich Tokayev, now the President of Kazakhstan. Next to him is Antonina Fedorovna Kotova, who at the time was the dean of the Faculty of History and Philology at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University... On the far right in the first row is Igor Vladimirovich Morgulov, a graduate of the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University, and currently the Russian Federation Ambassador to China," Zuenko described.
"A very atmospheric and characteristic photo. From the gender and age composition of the group to the setting of the classroom—it's a real treasure!" he added.
The sinologist noted that Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was the head of the first group of trainees. In 1984-1985, Tokayev worked at the central office of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was considered very prestigious at the time.
It should be noted that Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underwent an internship at the USSR Embassy in China and trained at the Beijing Language Institute in 1983-1984. In 1975, he was assigned to work at the Soviet Embassy in Singapore. From 1984 to 1985, he worked at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was later sent to the Soviet Embassy in the People's Republic of China, where he served until 1991 in positions ranging from Second Secretary to First Secretary and Counselor.
Ivan Zuenko is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of International Studies at MGIMO, an Associate Professor at the Department of Oriental Studies, and holds a Ph.D. in History.
