Tengrinews.kz - Donald Trump’s first day in office is expected to bring a series of actions targeting immigration enforcement and reversing key programs of current President Joe Biden, according to three sources familiar with the situation, as reported by Reuters.

Sources indicate that Trump’s measures would empower federal immigration officials to arrest individuals without criminal records, deploy military forces to the U.S.-Mexico border, and resume construction of the border wall.

It is also anticipated that Trump would end humanitarian programs introduced under Biden, which have enabled hundreds of thousands of migrants to legally enter the U.S. in recent years.

Additionally, there are reports that priority categories may include foreign students supporting the Palestinian group Hamas and those violating student visa terms.

According to Reuters, Trump plans to send National Guard troops to the border and declare a state of emergency over illegal migration, thereby unlocking funds for wall construction. Two sources suggested that the Arizona border, where the Democratic governor opposes anti-migration measures, may be prioritized.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated that there were 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country in 2022, a number that could have increased.

Building a steel wall along the U.S.-Mexico border was one of Trump’s major policies during his first term (2016–2021), with construction starting in 2018. President Biden later paused the project, though construction resumed last fall.

Previously, Trump promised that, on his first day as president, he would launch "the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out." He has claimed he would expel 15–20 million undocumented immigrants from the U.S.
