Several thousand people took part in the celebration of Kazakh St. Valentine’s Day late on April 15 in Almaty, Tengrinews.kz correspondent reported from the event. At 9 p.m. the first flock of sky lanterns went off into the air in the center of the Park of the First President at the crossing of Al-Farabi and Navoi streets. Some were launching the lanterns with a wish for a new love others dedicated them to their loved ones. Couples stood whispering and kissing watching the sky lighten up with thousands of new stars. Age of the participants ranged from 14 to 60. Some young adults brought their kids along with them. The park closed at 10 p.m. so the launches continued near the central entrance. The celebration culminated in eye-catching fireworks. May Almaty citizens were unable to get to the place in time because the massive flash mob caused a traffic jam in Al-Farabi street all the way from Zharokov street to Navoi street. Road police had to block one of the lanes on Al-Farabi street because of the large crowd that assembled near the park. Before the event 5306 Vkontakte users had confirmed their participation, 6300 users had registered themselves as possible attendants. Vkontakte is a Russian equivalent of Facebook social network.
