Almaty has inaugurated the first ever underground shopping mall named Almaly today, KazTag Agency reports. The opening ceremony was launched by the city’s Mayor Akhmetzhan Yessimov. “5 months following the launch of the Almaty subway we are launching the first ever underground shopping mall (…) It’s a landmark event for the city. The construction started back in 2006. The works were suspended amidst the global financial crisis [and resulting drying up of loans for construction companies]”. According to Almaly Trade, the investor, the new shopping mall floor area stands at 25 000 square meters. Each of the two shopping levels is equipped with a parking lot, with the overall parking area of 10 000 square meters (capable of accommodating 550 cars at a time). The shopping mall will feature over 80 boutique shops, a food court and a cinema zone. 6-thetre Bekmambetov Boutique Cinema capable of accommodating a total of 400 viewers will be the anchor tenant of the shopping mall. The cinema zone comprises 3 standard and 3 VIP cinema theatres. The Opening is scheduled for the summer. Among other things the cinemas will be running exclusive pre-premier showings of films by Bekmambetov. Timur Bekmambetov is a Russian director of Kazakh origin, producer and screenwriter who has worked on films and commercials. He is mostly popular for the Russian film Night Watch (2004) and its sequel Day Watch (2006), and the American film Wanted (2008). In 2010, Bekmambetov produced and was one of the directors of Yolki a.k.a. "The Six Degrees to Celebration" (English title) which became the second highest grossing Russian movie in Russian box office history. In 2011, Bekmambetov produced Apollo 18, along with The Weinstein Company, a found footage science fiction thriller, and The Darkest Hour, a science fiction film set in Moscow and produced by New Regency. Bekmambetov is currently directing and producing the live action adaption of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, also produced by Tim Burton and Jim Lemley. The actual construction of the shopping mall was started by Basis-A construction company in 2007. Initially the plan was to construct a 5-level shopping mall with a floor area of 120 000 square meters.
