Kazakhstan will build 2.5 thousand km long system of engineering facilities at the state border with Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan this year, KazTAG reports citing Nurzhan Myrzaliyev, Director of the Border Guard of Kazakhstan National Security Committee. “This year Kazakhstan Border Guard is planning to build engineering facilities from Zhetysai region (South-Kazakhstan oblast) to the Caspian Sea. This is around 2.5 thousand kilometers. Major works are currently performed in this area,” Myrzaliyev said at the sidelines on 67th meeting of the council of commanders of border troops of CIS countries on Thursday. According to him, the new system will help strengthen southern borders of Kazakhstan. Myrzaliyev also reminded that engineering facilities remaining from the Soviet time are successfully functioning at the border with China. Similar systems also exist at CIS borders in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Commenting the situation on the border, head of Kazakhstan border service mentioned several threats. “This meeting gives us an opportunity to collect analytical information and exchange operative information on countering illegal migrants, human trafficking and terrorism. The most vital issue is countering drug business and routing out the existing drug trafficking flows,” he stressed. Myrzaliyev also stated that “there have been no cases of apprehension of spies at the border”. “But we are constantly and quite successfully countering illegal migration,” he noted. Myrzaliyev informed that the meeting covered the plan of joint actions with border services of CIS countries for the next year. Several documents were signed at the meeting as well. Heads of CIS border services made a decision to hold joint operative-preventive event at the Caspian Sea. “It includes enhancement of actions against border violators at the Caspian Sea and, first of all, countering poaching. We have performed one stage of this operation jointly with Russia and Azerbaijan. It had very good results. We will perform similar operations at the Caspian once again,” Myrzaliyev said. He added that the decisions made at the meeting will help further strengthen CIS countries’ borders. “Signing of these documents enabled Kazakhstan to exchange information on the status of the borders, joint operations, operative-preventive measures at the Western borders in Belarus and on the Caspian Sea,” head of Kazakhstan border service said.
