When speaking today at the Women’s Congress convened to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence in Astana, President Nazarbayev called for a plan to ensure greater access for women to managerial positions by 2016. “As of today there is not a single woman holding a position of a regional governor or mayor; there are only 3 rayon [county] governors and 5 oblast [province] vice governors… I instruct the Government in partnership with the Presidential Administration to come up with a plan to promote more women to managerial positions by 2016”, official President's web site quotes President Nazarbayev as saying. Among other things President reminded that women account for about 40% of the country’s GDP. They make up 73% of all the country’s teaching staff and 87% of medical staff. Kazakhstan ranked highly in a global World Economic Forum (WEF) gender equality study, according to the 2010 Global Gender Gap Report 2010. Notably, Kazakhstan scored 41st among 134 nations, ahead of 14 European nations, for its inclusiveness of women in professional and government spheres.
