190,682 new diabetes patients were registered in Kazakhstan since the beginning of 2011, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Diabetes Association (KDA). 64,112 men, 126,570 women, including 1,160 children and 587 teenagers suffer from diabetes in Kazakhstan, the KDA president Nataliya Tukalevskaya said. The overall number of diabetes patients exceeds 700 thousand people in Kazakhstan. 174,762 more people were registered last year. This number exceeded the expected rate for 2010. “In Europe, for example, around 18 percent of all the health care costs are diabetes-related. The number of elderly people is growing and unless something is done to stop the spread of diabetes, the costs are expected to continue escalating,” said Tukalevskaya.
