Members of the first Kazakhstan expedition to the South Pole said that Kazakhstan's own polar station may appear in the Antarctic. On February 28, the travellers summarized their trip and shared their plans, Tengrinews.kz reports. They told the journalists about most difficult moments of their trip. According to Konstantin Orlov who reached the South Pole twice, there were difficulties on the return trip. The expedition had to frequently repair the car and feared they might failed to get beck home by the New Year. The trip finished prior to 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence. The expedition's manager Nurlan Abduov said that Kazakhstan travelers covered 4,600km on the route of Novolazarevskaya station - South Pole - Novolazarevskaya station. The scientists took snow and ice samples, measured radiation background and defined air content. Kazakh georgaphic society received the abalysis of the Antarctic samples, that was the first Kazakhstan's scientific material for further research. Kazgeo thinks that Kazakhstan may join the Antarctic Treaty. This would create an opportunity for Kazakhstan science to take an active part in studying the Antarctic in ecological, meteorological and other directions, they say. Abduov also added that Russian cameraman took part in the trip as well. "A movie of the expedition is currently being made in Moscow. I think we will present it in April. If you wish, we could screen the movie on Kazakhstan TV-channels," he addressed the journalists. A car expedition called The Unknown Kazakhstan is scheduled for August. The route will lay through unique and historical sites of Kazakhstan.
