Kazakhstan spends more than 45 million tenge ($308 thousand) a day on food for convicts, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Samal Gadylbekova, an official representative of the Correctional System Commission of Kazakhstan Justice Ministry. According to Gadylbekova, the country spends 950 tenge ($7) a day on food for one prisoner. Last year the cost was slightly lower: 860 tenge ($6). Currently there are 47,641 people in places of confinement so more than 45 million tenge ($308 thousand) is spent on their food every day. Gadylbekova said that an increase of expenses per one convict this year is related to the food prices rise. She noted that 950 tenge is calculated based on four meals daily. Feeding people in detention facilities is more expensive: 1500 tenge ($10) per one person daily. Considerable food costs is one of the reasons behind humanization of the correctional system, said Gadylbekova.
