U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan Kenneth J. Fairfax replied to the questions of Tengrinews.kz readers about the Eurasian Economic Union during an online-conference. “We do not consider the Eurasian Economic Union a restoration of the Soviet Union; it imposes no threat to the United States. The Eurasian Economic Union is an interesting concept and I would like to see how it develops,” Fairfax noted. He also told about development of democracy in Kazakhstan. “In the past 20 years our relations have considerably strengthened and now cover all the realms, from agriculture to nuclear researches,” the Ambassador said. “Under the strategic relations the United States continue cooperating with Kazakhstan in promotion of development of the civil society and democratic institutions.” According to him, Kazakhstan has made a number of significant steps during the 20 years of its independence, in particular, in economic sector, which resulted in an improvement of life and decrease of poverty. “Kazakhstan government clearly defined its plans on further development of the country, including full diversification of the economy and membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and other leading organizations,” the Ambassador added. He thinks that achievement of such ambitious goals would require significant additional work for development of the civil society and democratic institutions. Fairfax also noted that the Parliamentary elections to be held on January 15 are a good opportunity to demonstrate the country’s adherence to democracy by voting in compliance with the world’s best practices and standards.
