Shymkent artist Said Atabekov has won the Prince Claus Award, Otyrar-tv.kz reports. The Claus Fund that presents the awards has existed for 15 years. Annually it is looking for individuals, groups and organizations with outstanding achievements in culture and development from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The winner gets 100 thousand euro ($130.4 thousand), other 10 laureates get 25 thousand euro ($32.6 thousand) each. Peter van Leeuwen, Chargé d'Affaires of the Netherlands in Astana, arrived to Shymkent to hand over the contest diploma, certificate and prize to Said. Artworks of the Kazakh artist are hardly known in Kazakhstan, but are famous in Europe. So, strange as it may seem, the application for Atabekov's participation in the contest was submitted by Italy. You can see the last exhibition of Atabekov The Dream of Gengis Khan in Impronte Contemporary Art gallery in Milan. It presents three of the most important projects of his career and collected works from 2004 till now including photos and videos. The exhibition will be on until February 18, 2012. "Today this trend in modern art is very acute, but unfortunately it isn’t very popular in Kazakhstan," Atabekov said. "Said is a talented artist, he used to paint, make photo installations, and we made performances together. Now he tends photographs more, apparently he likes what he makes in photography better," Kazakh artist Smail Bayaliev said.
