Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev thinks that Syria should not repeat the Libyan scenario, RIA Novosti writes.
Nazarbayev said that the UN mandate was exceeded during the military operation in Libya and such scenario should not repeat itself in Syria. “The mandate was exceeded and there was interference into the internal affairs of the country,” he said.
Military unrest in Libya lasted for around 9 months. Former President Moamer Kadhafi was killed October 20 near Sirte. “Unfortunately, we saw how the UN took one decision on Libya: to simply monitor the sky, but in the end it resulted in attacks and murder of Kadhafi. I am not pro-Kadhafi and I'm not going to defend him, but it all looks like the decisions of the UN Security Council have been tampered with,” Kazakhstan President said.
Nazarbayev noted that “this experience tells us that such measures cannot be applied towards other independent countries, Syria for example.” “The world community os concerned that people are being killed over there and we have to work on solving this problem. Kazakhstan is chairing the Organization for Islamic Cooperation. And we will not stand on the sidelines,” he added.
Anti-government unrests have been seen in Syria since March. The protesters are claiming resignation of the acting president Bashar al-Assad. Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry is concerned over attacks on Kazakhstan embassy in Syria. Kazakhstan, Chair of the Council of Foreign Ministries of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation, called the Syrian government to take measures to stabilized the situation.
