Microsoft presents new cloud in Almaty

Microsoft Corporation presented a new generation cloud technology in Almaty. It is meant to enhance students’ academic progress and communication skills, Tengrinews.kz reports. Microsoft live@edu is a package of communication and collaboration services for students incorporating e-mails, calendars, document sharing, instant messaging, video chat and mobile e-mail. The technology features 10 gigabytes (Gb) of e-mail storage at no cost, 5Gb of document storage and 25Gb of additional file storage. It allows students to take part in online-trainings, discuss ideas and collectively work on research projects and tasks. SharedView application can accommodate groups of up to 15 people working together online. Students will be able to exchange short messages and make voice and video calls even without a computer. live@edu can be accessed from any devices through Web browsers for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. All the personal data is secured and stored in window live sky drive protected by passwords. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana was the first university to introduce this system in 2009. More 6,000 people are using the system already; 1,500 of them are university employees. The platform helps save time and simplify documents flow, improves stability and security. In future the university is planning to implement a complete electronic educational portal called iUniversity. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is also using live@edu. The new system provides students with access to the latest technology tools and services. One of the technology’s important implications is that it helps them prepare for adult life and enchases their responsibility. It helps them improve time management. It has a built-in protection from viruses, spam and phishing attacks. Besides it allows school to be submerged into the cloud and maintain its online privacy at the same time.
