According to Kazakhstan’s PM Karim Massimov, at the sitting of the intergovernmental council in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) September 16, the two nations signed an agreement on gas supplies to Kyrgyzstan, Tengrinews.kz reports. KazMunayGas of Kazakhstan will be in charge of arranging the supplies. Price details are yet to be finalized. “But we have reached an agreement in principle; respective state agencies will finalize the details. This year Kyrgyzstan will no longer face problems with heating”, PM Massimov commented at a joint briefing following his talks with his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev. The sides also agreed on extra electricity power and water supplies to south regions Kazakhstan. PM Massimov also commented on possible accession of Kyrgyzstan into the Customs Union [of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus]. “It is not an easy issue. Kazakhstan is part of the Customs Union. The membership offers certain benefits. It must be a well-thought-through decision. Now there is a border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. We are facing a number of issues related to job opportunities in Kazakhstan for Kyrgyzstan citizens and to goods movement. These issues will be completely gone once Kyrgyzstan enters the Union”, PM Massimov said.
