Almaty cycling community is asking managers of shopping centers to install special parking lots for bicycles, Tengrinews.kz reports citing an open letter of representatives of Velo-Almaty initiative group. "Lack of special parking lots for bicycles next to shopping and commercial centers is hindering wide use of bicycles for transportation in the city. We are forced to use fences, railings, posts and trees. This is uncomfortable both for cyclists and pedestrians (not even mentioning conflicts with security departments of the facilities),” the message states. The cyclists reminded that more and more Almaty residents choose bicycles to move from one point to another in the city. According to Velo-Almaty, city administration held 15 cycling marches in 2009-2010. “Cycling infrastructure in the city will create good conditions for widespread use of bicycles, which will help decrease the traffic load, improve ecological situation and the residents' health,” they wrote.
