Timur Bekmambetov, a Russian director of Kazakh origin, producer and screenwriter who has worked on films and commercials, told Tengrinews.kz about his plans to launch a studio of modern computer graphics in Kazakhstan. July 1, before the official opening ceremony at the 2nd ASTANA International Action Film Festival, its initiator shared his views on how he sees the future of filmmaking in Kazakhstan. Although this idea occurred to Bekmambetov long time ago, he is sure that the film festival is just what he needs to launch the project. "There are a lot of computer graphics innovations, modern ways of film shooting that nobody has ever applied. It seems to me that Kazakhstan is an ideal place for experimenting as there are a lot of talented people, ambitions and funds. A new studio may emerge shortly to create computer graphics of unbelievably high quality", he said. Bekmambetov believes that filmmakers in Kazakhstan don't need to imitate the West to be successful. "Why should they stick to the beaten track? Here in Kazakhstan one should do things that don't require enormous experience and hundreds of thousands of specialists available in Los-Angeles. In the US there are a lot of traditions, well-proven technologies that somewhat impede progress. And since film making in Kazakhstan is neither advanced nor in a position to compete with US cinema industry, it is easier to introduce new technology here. It would be right not to imitate, but to try something new that no one else does. (…) It could be a studio producing high-tech film production, like James Cameron's films. From the very beginning we should make innovative films", Bekmambetov concluded.
