The project to expand carrying capacity of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) has been launched today, Novosti Kazakhstan reports. Following the modernization project, the carrying capacity of the pipeline linking the Kazakh Tengiz oilfield with the Russian Black Sea port in Novorossiysk will make up 67 million tons of crude per year. According to the Consortium’s Director General Nokolai Platonov, apart from replacement of a 88-km-long narrow section in Kazakhstan, the project worth $5.4 billion envisages modernization of five operating pumping stations and construction of another 10 pumping stations, as well as 6 storage reservoirs for oil (for a total of 480 000 tons) and a third single-point buoy mooring at the maritime oil loading terminal Yuzhnaya Ozereevka. The consortium was launched in 1992 to transport Kazakhstan oil across Russia and light Russian oil to far abroad countries through the maritime oil loading terminal Yuzhnaya Ozereevka (in Novorossiysk). In 2010 the CPC transported a total of 34.9 million tons of crude, including 28.4 million tons of Kazakh crude. To accommodate growing oil production output in the region, in 2010 the consortium decided to expand the pipeline’s carrying capacity up to 76 million tons a year. The construction works are to be completed by 2015.
