President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has met with the Council of Wise Men in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the Kazakh leader.

The Council is comprised of distinguished former politicians and Nobel Prize winners, including former Israeli president Shimon Peres, former leader of Poland Lech Walesa, ex-President of Colombia César Gaviria, former head of the Spanish Government Jose Luis Zapatero and former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei.

The participants of the meeting deliberated about global politics, economy and international security and also touched upon Kazakhstan’s foreign policy initiatives and its role in international community’s efforts to address various conflicts around the world.

The measures that the Central Asian economy has been undertaking to ensure sustainable development amid the current economic situation was also on the meeting’s agenda.

When delivering his statement, Nazarbayev told the participants about Kazakhstan’s achievements over the years of independence, since 1991. “In the beginning of our journey we were struggling to survive, and there were mostly negative predictions about the future of Kazakhstan and its opportunities. We did not feel comfortable with such a prospect, therefore we started taking decisive steps. Shifting from socialist economy to a market one came to be one of the greatest challenges. We have conducted a privatization program and attracted the largest amount of investments among Central Asian countries over three years. Today Kazakhstan is among the 50 most competitive countries and among the 20 states with the largest volume of direct investments," Nazarbayev pointed out.

He went on saying that amid the instability at the global commodity markets, Kazakhstan had been implementing the industrialization program, which facilitated creation of hundreds of new enterprises. Presently, oil-rich Kazakhstan is carrying out the second five-year plan of its intensive industrial-innovative development program striving to reduce the country’s dependence on export of raw materials.

The Kazakh leader marked Kazakhstan’s initiatives aimed at the development of its transport potential and infrastructure that, in turn, diversify routes and significantly increase its trade turnover with other countries.

In this regard, Kazakhstan’s National Oil Fund, which accumulates the country’s windfall oil exports revenues, helps Kazakhstan achieve its goals and fulfilling social obligations.

Nazarbayev also emphasized the importance of preserving peace and stability within the country, which allows Kazakhstanis to look to the future with confidence.

The meeting with the ranking foreign experts was held shortly after the recent signing of the agreement between Kazakhstan and the IAEA establishing a nuclear fuel bank on the country’s territory. One of its goals is to prevent nuclear proliferation, thus maintaining global stability and peace.

Kazakhstan’s numerous efforts towards this goal, including its role in curbing nuclear weapons proliferation, assistance in addressing the Ukrainian and Syrian crises were highly appraised by the members of the Council.
