Eurasian International Film Festival: from child marriage to art fantasy

10 feature films have made it in the competition program of the 11th Eurasian International Film Festival (EIFF), Tengrinews reports citing Eurasiaiff.kz

The film festival takes place from September 19 to 25 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The Silk Road Competition program this year includes Yermek Tursunov’s Stranger (Kazakhstan), Norway by Yannis Veslemes (Greece), Mirlan Abdykalykov’s Heavenly Nomadic (Kyrgyzstan), Deniz Gamze Erguven’s Mustang (Turkey), Labour of Love by Aditya Vikram Sengupta (India), Salome Alexi’s Line of Credit (Georgia), Elchin Musaoglu’s Nabat (Azerbaijan), Khadija Al Salami’s I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced (Yemen), Nima Javidi’s Melbourne (Iran) and Irina Evteeva’s Arventur (Russia).

This year’s competition program presents a wide verity of genres ranging “from ambitious projects to small-budget festival sensations”. The festival organizers noted a number of women directors joining 2015 EIFF.  Erguven debuts with her film exploring themes of oppression in a conservative society. Sengupta presents the beauty of heroine’s unbroken spirit and strength in against the background of poverty and confusion. Evteeva experiments with art, theatre and fantasy in her Arventur. Alexi brings a discussion on debts and despair. Finally, Al-Salami takes us in the heart of Yemen’s child marriage.

The Jury of the Silk Road Competition is led by Abderrahmane Sissako, an acclaimed Mauritanian film director. The jury consists of a British actress and screenwriter Justine Waddell, Kim Dong-Ho, the Honorary President of Busan IFF, a Russian screenwriter Odelsha Agishev and Akan Satayev, a Kazakhstani film director.

Aside from the main Competition program, the EIFF brings Out of Competition, in Special Screenings and Shaken’s Constellation (Central Asia and Kazakhstan).

The Festival kicked off on September 19 with the premier of Hacker by Akan Satayev.
