Kazakhstan’s Agency for Religion will be developing a concept of moderate Islam, Novosti Kazakhstan quoted the Agency’s Head Lama Sharif Kairat Kayirbekuly as saying June 17. “Every Kazakhstan citizen enjoys freedom of belief and freedom of choice. We have made our choice. It is based on the “one nation – one religion” principle. This principle makes us a nation. In this context, we will be developing a national concept of moderate Islam”, he said. Lama Sharif promised to hold a special briefing for media on the subject later on. He emphasized that his Agency will be promoting freedom of belief, contributing to the national legislation on religion. Besides, the Agency will be involved in initiatives to strengthen stability of the Kazakhstan’s society. Special emphasis will be made on prevention of extremism. Lama Sharif Kairat Kayirbekuly was appointed Chairman of the Kazakhstan’s Agency for Religion June 7. Before that he served as Kazakhstan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The Agency was launched May 21, 2011.
