Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has had a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Tengrinews reports.

Nazarbayev flew to Moscow on Friday after he laid flowers at the Fatherland Defenders’ monument in Astana in remembrance of the victims of the war. Then he went to Moscow on an official two-day visit to take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the victory.

During the meeting, Putin once again congratulated Nazarbayev on his win in the presidential elections held in Kazakhstan on April 26 and expressed hope that the bilateral cooperation would continue to expand at the same pace.

Putin also marked Nazarbayev’s contribution to the development of the Eurasian Economic Union. "I want to thank you again for your initiatives related to the integration processes. It is largely thanks to you that we are taking additional steps today to deepen our economic union. I remember quite well how you put forward the initiative to create the Customs Union, and later our Eurasian Economic Union," Putin is quoted as saying by the press service of the Kremlin

Nazarbayev, in turn, emphasized that it was his first official visit outside of Kazakhstan after his reelection.

“We have been working together for over 15 years. We have signed the good-neighborliness and alliance treaty with you. (…) We are all facing some difficulties - the economic crisis, fall in the prices of our main exports, sanctions that (...) impede our work, but Kazakhstan has always stood by Russia as a good neighbor and friend and I am sure together we will find a way out of any situation. Our people have gone through much harder times. We live in a different era, different time where opportunities are different. I congratulate you all with all my heart on the Victory Day,” Nazarbayev said.

He also mentioned the Eurasian Economic Union being 'in demand': "Armenia was first to join, and now we have welcomed Kyrgyzstan. Although our trade turnover is down because of the continued crisis, I feel that the Eurasian Economic Union holds great promise. Just look at why many nations want to join us: China wants to create a free economic zone, we have signed agreements with Vietnam, Turkey wants to join in, and India wants to be with us. In other words, this union is in demand, and it is appreciated by others."

While being in Moscow, Nazarbayev also had a bilateral meeting with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and President of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang, who also participated in the celebrations. During the meeting, Nazarbayev and his counterparts discussed bilateral cooperation in politics, trade, investments and also its prospects. The leaders also exchanged views on the most acute topics of the international agenda.
