Kazakhstan Minister of Economic Development and Trade Kairat Kelimbetov estimated the chances of Gregory Marchenko to head IMF in his interview to Tengrinews.kz. When asked to give his opinion on the chances of Marchenko to obtain this position, Kairat Kelimbetov said that the National Bank Governor's chances are over 50 percent. Besides, the Minister said that the fact that Kazakhstan representative made it into the short-list of the IMF candidates is an achievement in itself. “This certifies the respect to Kazakhstan and its socio-economic and financial policies that were implemented during the years of independence, to the authority of our President, and of course the professional level of our economists and Gregory Marchenko in particular,” commented Kairat Kelimbetov. The Minister of Economic Development and Trade reminded how seriously the candidates to lead the IMF are discussed at different levels. “The BRIC countries are trying to come up with a consolidated position at the level of G8 and G20. I think that Kazakhstan representative is the best solution for all the disputes and I believe that he meets all the criteria set for this position,” Kelimbetov added. He also told Tengrinews.kz journalist that he amicably supports Marchenko in his promotion to this position.
