Should EXPO-2017 International Fair be hosted by Kazakhstan, its facilities will be built behind Ak-Orda presidential residence in Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Aidar Kazybayev, head of the Trade Committee of the Economic Development and Trade Ministry, as saying at the regional conference on alternative energy. “The 25-hectare area behind Ak Orda residence will be divided into three parts. The first part will be meant for Akimat (local administration), the second one for businesses and the third one for Nazarbayev University, where an international center for green energy will be established,” Aidar Kazybayev said. The country to host the Fair will be chosen in December, 2012. Kazakhstan will submit its application signed by Prime-Minister Karim Massimov to Paris in June. In case of victory Kazakhstan will have five years to prepare the buildings for EXPO-2017 International Fair. 3.5 billion euro were spent on the Fair in Spanish Saragossa in 2008. Half of the funding came from private investments. One third of the sum was provided by participating countries. The Fair helped attract investments and technologies to this arid and depressed Spanish region. The Saragossa fair focused on Water and Sustainable Development. The theme that Kazakhstan is proposing for 2017 is Energy of the Future. EXPO-2017 could become one more global event for Kazakhstan after 2011 Asian Winter Games and the OSCE Summit. “During the three months Expo Kazakhstan plans to attract more than 4 million tourists, international experts and scientists, who study renewable energy sources,” Aidar Kazybayev said. French city of Liege could become one of Astana's competitors. By Maksim Popov
