Best caricaturists of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) presented their works at the show called Freedom of speech without words in Almaty dedicated to the World Press Freedom Day, Tengrinews.kz reports. Almost a dozen artists from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan presented their views on media freedom in their countries. An employee of The Freedom of Speech newspaper Igor Kiyko became the best caricaturist of the year. He has won international prizes several times before. As per Kiyko, one of his paintings shows a dog and a cat. “I have drawn from the eternal conflict of the animals that were forced to sit at the negotiations table so that they learn to live and communicate without conflicts. The idea is very simple,” he said. Kiyko has been drawing caricatures for 20 years and this is his 36th victory. He says that caricature is not aggressive, but a kind and politically correct genre. The second place was given to Nikolay Veryovochkin from Almaty. Oleg Loktev from Moscow won the third prize. Awards were also given to two painters from Uzbekistan. As per the coordinator of the IFEX projects Yelena Malygina, it is a big success that they managed to arrange for the exhibition of the paintings in the Central Museum of Almaty where every visitor may see the illustrated press through the journalists' perspective. “We want to support this genre and pinpoint the officials who are very closed when it comes to press. We selected these officials and sent them red apples with noses and stitched up mouths. Some of them refused to take part in the nomination as, apparently, they were ashamed to receive such an award,” Malygina said. The show was organized by Adil Soz International Freedom of Expression Protection Fund, UNESCO bureau, UN Department of Public Information in Kazakhstan, International Freedom of Expression Exchange IFEX and Almaty city administration.
