State police took over the investigation into the fatal US police shooting of an unarmed cook from Kazakhstan in Olde Towne Portsmouth, Virginia. According to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the decision was made Tuesday to get state police to investigate what led to 26-year-old Kirill Denyakin's death, Wavy.com wrote. Independent thanatopsy of Kirill Denyakin’s body showed that he was shot 11 times. According to the official representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan Askar Abdrakhmanov, the investigation into Kirill Denyakin’s death could take up to 6 weeks, Tengrinews.kz reported. “The lawyer said that the investigation can take a month or a month and a half,” Askar Abdrakhmanov said on May 3. He said that the Kazakh Embassy in US was dealing with repatriation of Kirill’s body to Kazakhstan. The body is expected to be delivered this week. The tragedy happened on April 23, when Denyakin was trying to get into his friend's apartment at 454 Green Street. Police says that Portsmouth Police Officers were dispatched over a report of burglary. When the police officer came to the scene he found staggering unarmed Kirill banging on the door. He ordered Denyakin to freeze. When the unarmed man stumbled in the police officer’s direction the officer shot him dead. A few days later Kirill's mother left for US. Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry and Kazakhstan Embassy in US are bearing the expenses related to transportation Denyakin's body to Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry has sent a note to USA. The Denyakins are planning to sue Portsmouth Police Department.
