The first bike race of this season dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s Independence took place in Almaty. The race was timed to the celebrations the Unity Day of the People of Kazakhstan that will kick off tomorrow. More than 200 nonprofessional cyclists took part in the race. The cycling race started at the crossing of Al Farabi and Tattimbet streets at 8:30 in the morning. The column rode alone Al Farabi street in western direction and finished near the Park of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (at the crossing of Al Farabi and Navoi streets). 16-old Vsevolod from Almaty was the first cyclist to cross the finish line. Riders ranged from schoolchildren to pensioners. After the race participants received several awards in such nominations as The Oldest Participant and The Youngest Participant. This is not the only cycling event that is held on the occasion of the Unity Day celebration. During the tomorrow march on Astana Square (crossing of Tole bi and Ablay Khan street) 700 bikers and 500 cyclists followed by 7 columns of various ethno-cultural associations will cross the square to the strains of a brass band at 11 a.m. in Almaty. Participants of the cycling column will be gathering at the crossing of Zheltoksan and Bogenbay streets at 9 am. Almaty Administration has already announced that the next cycling race will take place on the eve of the before the May 9th Victory Day. By Vladimir Dmitriyev
