Kazakhstan plans to toughen fines for violation of intellectual property rights and related rights. This was announced April 29 by Ms. Sholpan Abdreeva, Head of the Committee for Intellectual Property Rights under the Ministry of Justice, Bnews.kz reported. “The new draft administrative offense code seeks to toughen respective fines (…) the current penalties cannot deter piracy (…) Kazakhstan has seen popularity of P2P file sharing websites where users exchange pirated films, games, music and software (…) Those downloading pirated content are not always fully aware of violating intellectual property rights”, Ms. Abdreeva said. According to her, Kazakhstan will be gradually moving to tougher measures applied widely in the West: blocking of the file sharing websites, penalties for users of pirated content.
