Kazakhstan citizen now heads UNESCO Committee on Conventions and Recommendations

Kazakhstan’s representative Assel Utegenova was elected chairman of UNESCO Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry. The appointment was announced at the meetings of the Committee on October 3-5 in Paris. Utegenova was elected upon a recommendation of members of the executive body’s bureau and committee. “Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in this powerful committee will last until completion of the next session of UNESCO General Conference in November 2013,” the message states. Besides, the commission accepted recommendations on 29 human rights issues. The meeting also covered observance of a range of the organization’s regulatory acts and international conventions. The Committee on Conventions and Recommendations is a permanent auxiliary body of UNESCO executive council. It was established at the 70th session of the executive council in 1965. The Committee currently counts 30 member-countries.
