Rompetrol has fully switched to Euro-5 fuel production, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Rompetrol’s public relations department. “Rompetrol has successfully completed modernization of Petromidia oil refinery increasing its processing capacity from 3.8 to 5 million tons of oil products and switching to production of Euro-5 standard fuel brining the production volume in line with the demand for oil products in Romania and the Black Sea region. The total investments into the refinery’s modernization made $380 million,” the press-service writes. “Petromidia oil refinery is an important asset for KazMunaiGas and Rompetrol, as it is has the capacity to fully process the oil of Urals brand supplied from Kazakhstan. Completion of this project complies with the goal of KazMunaiGas to develop export oil routes to the European markets by securing the company’s presense in the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions and creation of anintegrated value added chain 'from well to consumer',” first deputy chairman of KazMunaiGas Daniyar Berlibayev said. The modernization project of Petromidia refinery was lauched in 2006. It included implementation of 9 major projects: construction of 5 new units and modernization/expansion of 4 existing ones. Around $170 million out of the total cost were spent on construction of a mild hydrocracking unit, which enabled the refinery to switch to Euro-5 standard (with sulfur content of 10 particles per million). Besides, this allowed to increase the annual production of the diesel fuel from 1.5 to 2.5 million tons and reach the highest production level in the region: 84 percent. Along with the modernization program, Rompetrol implemented a range of projects to improve its transport and logistics infrastructure. Besides, additional $50 million were spent on implementation of the ecological programs and brining the production process in line with the European fuel standards and current legislative requirements in environmental protection. Rompetrol company deals with retail sales of oil products via 1,100 sales points. 100 percent of the company is owned by Kazakhstan’s national oil company KazMunaiGas.
