Kazakhstan weight-lifter Anna Nurmukhambetova, 69kg category, has lifted a combined total of 251 kilograms at the London Olympics weight-lifting tournament. The 19-y.o. weight-lifter became fifth with this weight. Khabar TV channel was broadcasting the tournament live. North Korea’s Rim Jong-Sim won the tournament by lifting a combined total of 261 kilograms (115+146), Romania’s Daniela Cocos was in the second place with 256 kilograms (115+146) and Maryna Shkermankova and Dzina Sazanevec of Belarus were third and fourth correspondingly. The referees, who judged the tournament, didn’t score Anna’s third attempt in snatch and this incident had a negative effect on Anna psychologically and might gave been the cause of her defeat. The athlete made a successful lift and all three white lights that turned on proved this, but the referees still did not score it. (According to the rules, if the lift is successful, the referee immediately hits a white button and a white light is turned on, indicating the lift as successful.) This incident must have disappointed the athlete. This is the first Olympic Games for the young Kazakhstan weight-lifter and probably it is not her last one. Anna Nurmukhambetova was born in Kostanay oblast and was brought up in an orphanage. Then she moved to Kokshetau, where she had been training in the oblast’s sports school.
