Russia and Kazakhstan plan to complete talks on the single air defense system by the end of 2012, RIA Novosti reports, citing Air Force Vice Commander-in-Chief Major General Pavel Kurachenko. “In the Kyrgyzstan’s Cholpon Ata, at the sitting of the CIS Air Defense Coordination Committee, Russia will discuss the agreement with the Kazakh counterparts”, Mr. Kurachenko said, expressing hope that the actual signing will take place either late 2012 or early 2013. As of today only Russia and Belarus have a single air defense system. According to Mr. Kurachenko, a similar agreement is to be signed with Armenia. However, in the latter case it will be a united air defense system, rather than a single one, since the two nations have no common border. Plans are there to sign respective agreements on single air defense with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. According to Mr. Kurachenko, earlier efforts to launch a single air defense system of the Central Asia region were suspended due to complicated talks with Uzbekistan.
