Kazakhstan's former Almaty is a candidate city for the regional office of the UN Women, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Deputy Director and Assistant Secretary-General John Hendra. “The thing is that we, being a young organization in the family of the United Nations, are currently establishing our representative offices at the 5 continents of the world. As for Europe and Asia, three countries are the candidates to host the regional office: Slovakia (Bratislava), Turkey (Istanbul) and Kazakhstan (Almaty). We work with the Kazakhstan government to ensure equality for men and women and the essential aspects of the gender policies,” Hendra said. He noted that all three countries had good chances. Speaking of Kazakhstan's city, he called Almaty a serious candidate. “Of course, Almaty is a very serious candidate location for this important office. Almaty is already a center for the sub-regional office of UN Women. Besides, Kazakhstan is a very diplomatically active country of the region and Almaty plays a very important role, in particular, in provision of humanitarian aid to such neighboring countries as Afghanistan,” official representative of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry Altai Abibullayev said. “In general, I can say that Almaty’s chances are pretty high and they have been once again reaffirmed during our meeting today,” he added. However, according to Hendra, the final decision depends on the meetings with the representatives of two other countries. By Aidana Ussupova
