Karaganda schoolgirl won an international contest of scientific-technical creativity, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Ministry of Education and Science. “The first place in Climate and Energy category (a prize of $3,000) and the title of the Best Engineering Work ($5,000) were awarded to Kazakhstan schoolgirl Assiya Kussainova and her project for her invention called Development and engineering of the wind engine based on Magnus effect with the use of rotating cylinders of variable section. The work is aimed at inventing a compact multi-blade wind generator that is able to operate amid low wind speed,” the message states. Besides the main prize, her invention got special awards from Carnegie Mellon University (U.S.) and King Abdulaziz and His Companions' Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Saudi Arabia) and won the 3rd place in Renewable Energy category. Assiya also won a trip to a European contest of young scientists. The final of the international pre-college science competition Intel ISEF – 2012 was participated by over 1,500 best young inventors and scientists from 68 countries. Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is one of the most large-scale international educational initiatives of the world-famous Intel corporation. The contest was founded in 1950. Intel has been its main sponsor since 1998, Kazakhstan was first represented in Intel ISEF in 2001. Intel ISEF annually awards over $3 million in prizes and scholarships. The contest, by two thirds participated by American students, is aimed at sparking the students’ interest to scientific research and popularizing science and engineering. This year Kazakhstan was represented by three schoolchildren: Assiya Kussainova, a student of Karaganda Oblast Daryn boarding school for gifted children, Nurbek Kungozhin, a student of Zhautykov national specialized physics and mathematics boarding school for gifted children, and Arman Kadyrov, a student of Almaty school No.90. The best scientific projects were selected by the contest’s jury that included representatives of the world-leading universities and world-famous scientists.
