Tokayev expressed condolences to the Emir of Qatar

Tengrinews.kz — The Head of State sent a telegram of condolences to the Emir of Qatar.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his deep condolences to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani regarding the tragic incident at the Ras Laffan industrial center, which left many people injured or missing.

"In this difficult hour, we stand in solidarity with Qatar and express our support for the efforts aimed at the search and rescue of those affected," the telegram reads.

What happened

Late Sunday evening, June 21, an explosion occurred at Qatar's Ras Laffan gas complex. It is the world's largest hub for the production and export of liquefied natural gas.

The Qatar Ministry of Energy and the state-owned company QatarEnergy have officially confirmed 13 fatalities. Another 66 employees sustained injuries of varying severity, with many foreign specialists among the victims. A large-scale search and rescue operation has been deployed at the scene.

Qatar's Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi emphasized at an emergency press conference that the incident was an internal technical (operational) failure rather than sabotage or a hostile attack.
