Tengrinews.kz – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the country’s military forces to seize control of areas within the buffer zone on the Golan Heights, citing the collapse of a longstanding separation agreement with Syria, according to CNN.
Netanyahu declared that the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria had "collapsed", prompting his decision to "seize the buffer zone and command positions nearby". He stressed the perceived threat from "unknown rulers in Damascus" and stated, "We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border".
Following Netanyahu's order, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced their entry into the buffer zone along the Syrian border.
Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since 1967. Since 1974, a United Nations peacekeeping mission has patrolled the buffer zone established between Israel and Syria.
The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan made a statement regarding the safety of Kazakh peacekeepers stationed on the Golan Heights. They noted that if the situation requires it, the possibility of evacuating the mission will be reviewed by the United Nations leadership in coordination with the mission's command on the ground.
This development follows the collapse of Syria’s 61-year Ba'ath Party rule, which had been in power since 1963. The fall of the Ba'ath regime was marked by the departure of President Bashar al-Assad, who relinquished his role as president.
The fate of former President Bashar al-Assad remains unclear, with Western media reporting that he may have died in a plane crash.
